LABOUR FORCE AND EMPLOYMENT BY INDUSTRY

The number of employed persons in December  2012 was 599. The number of unemployed was 11 being 1.8% of the workforce. While the number of unemployed persons has increased from 4 in December 2011 it has remained steady from December 2009 with an average of 1.8%.

The 2011 Population Census figures provide the most up to date data on the Region’s employment by industry. The largest employer was the Accommodation and Food Services sector, employing 17.5%, the majority directly in the tourism industry. Mining is the second largest sector, employing 15.7% with the Public Administration and Safety sector also being significant at 14.8% due to the Shire of Shark Bay and large presence of Department of Parks and Wildlife and Department of Fisheries.

AVERAGE TAXABLE INCOME

The average taxable income for Shark Bay has risen in the last four years from $36,966 in 2008 to $45,776 in 2011.
