Building Information
The Shire of Shark Bay’s Manager of Regulatory Services ensures buildings, both existing and proposed are compliant with the Building Code of Australia.
The objective of the Building Code of Australia 1996, is to ensure acceptable standards of structural sufficiency, fire safety, health and amenity are maintained in all building work.
The function of the Manager of Regulatory Services in administering and enforcing building regulations is to avert or at least minimise the risk of danger to health and safety from sub-standard building work.

The Western Australian Government introduced energy efficiency regulations for houses in Western Australia on 1 July 2003 through the Building Code of Australia 1996.
The Shire of Shark Bay is in Climatic Zone 3.

The Builders' Registration Board can provide access to current information about registration and owner-building.

Building Licenses
Every builder and/or owner builder intending to construct a building, alter, add to, repair or underpin, demolish or remove an existing building should obtain a licence before commencing that work.
Every builder and/or owner builder making an application for a building licence should submit to the building surveyor:
- Building Details (two complete sets of drawings to scale not less than 1:100)
- Block Details
- Specifications
- Structural Calculations
- Cost Estimate
- Compliance with Fire Regulations
- Requirements as to Drawings
- New and Existing
- Please submit BCITF application (construction cost over $20,000) to the Shire
- Please submit Septic Tank application form, if applicable, to the Shire.
- Please submit approved site plan from the Water Corporation, if applicable, to the Shire

Building Inspections
All building construction, alteration and demolition work must comply with the Building Code of Australia. The builder and/or owner builder must advise the Building Department during the course of construction so they can carry out routine inspections to ensure that the building is compliant and has been constructed in accordance with the plans and specifications previously approved under the Building Licence.
