Dogs
Control of dogs is the responsibility of Council’s Ranger Services under the Dog Act 1976. Dog owners should be aware that it is a requirement that all dogs over the age of three months be registered with the Local Government. The registration period is from 1 November to 31 October the following year. Failure to register your dog can lead to an ‘on the spot’ fine of $100. Dogs can be registered at the Shire Office, 65 Knight Terrace, Denham.
The State Government determines the registration fees, which are as follows:
| Un-sterilised dog or bitch | |
|---|---|
| Annual | $30 |
| 3 years | $75 |
| Sterilised | |
|---|---|
| Annual | $10 |
| 3 years | $18 |
Pensioners receive a 50% concession on these fees.
Before Council can register a sterilised dog it needs proof of the fact. It is usually provided by a Veterinary Surgeon’s Certificate or a Statutory Declaration made by the owner.
The sighting of a tattoo ear insignia denoting a sterilised dog is also acceptable.
Responsibilities
The Dog Act 1976 provides that owners need to ensure that their dog:
- Wears a collar displaying the owner’s name, address and Council registration tag attached when in public places
- Can be confined to the premises where it lives
- Is held by a competent person capable of controlling a dog on a maximum 2 metre lead when in public places
- In designated areas dogs may be exercised off a leash. However, the person in control must carry a leash should it be required to be attached
- Is registered in one persons name who is over the age of 18 years.
Council needs to be notified in writing about any change of dog ownership so its registration records can be kept up to date.
In a residential area Council limits each household to two dogs. Up to six dogs may be kept on a rural property.
Designated Exercise Areas
Owners are allowed to exercise their dogs off a leash at the following areas:
- Denham Recreation Reserve
- Beach Reserve west of Denham Service Jetty
- Beach Reserve east of Tradewinds roundabout
- Little Lagoon Reserve
It is important that all owners remove their dog’s excreta from all reserves and public places within the Shire of Shark Bay. Dog Litter Bags are available at the Denham Foreshore.
