Shark Bay Economy

Shark Bay has a population of 928. Therefore, it is no surprise this Gascoyne sub-region has a small and specialised economy. In 2012/13 the LGA contributed .02% to the State's   Gross Regional Product (GRP).

In  2012-13, mining was the highest contributor at 59.2% of Shark Bay's GRP, this being solely from the Useless Loop Salt Mine, operated by Mitsui.

The second highest contributor was health care and social assistance at 6.30% is almost double the region's average of 3.2%. This could be attributed to the increased ageing population of the Shire requiring specialised services.

Next highest were construction at 5.8% which reflects the investment in major infrastructure such as a new recreation centre and new state government buildings.

Education and training provision accounts for 5.6% of the GRP, while accommodation and food services provide the largest area of employment opportunity and contributes 3.5% to the GRP which is higher than the regional average of 2.2%.

Agriculture, forestry and fishing account for around 1.5% of the Shark Bay economy, however the majority of this is contributed from aquaculture and fishing.
